NOAA has released the 2018 summer regulations for our area

NOAA has released the 2018 summer regulations for our area and they are as follows:

  • Area 3A (Central Gulf of Alaska): Charter operators will have a two fish daily bag limit, maximum size limit of less than or equal to 28 inches on one of those halibut, and a four fish annual limit. In addition, Wednesdays will be closed to charter fishing in 3A all season, along with six Tuesday (July 10, July 17, July 24, July 31, August 7, and August 14) closures in the summer. Vessels and charter permit holders will continue to be limited to one trip per day.

2018 Halibut regulations up in the air.

2018 Halibut regulations up in the air.

This was just sent from the Homer Charter Association.

The IPHC meeting ended not the way anyone expected. Basically, they did not approve or disapprove any 2018 halibut regulations. As most of you know the IPHC consists of 3 Canadian and 3 American Commissioners. When the time came to vote on catch limits, the Americans and Canadians could not agree on them. When the annual IPHC commission meeting came to an end, no agreement was reached. This is unprecedented and concerning.

Now we have some confusion as to what will happen for our 2018 regulations. Some sources are saying that we will revert back to 2017 regulations and other sources are saying that the Secretary of Commerce will decide regulations.

Our Calendar is open for Halibut fishing except Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Salmon charters are available on those dates.

To be continued...

Garrett Neugebauer from Bend, OR  hooked into a 200.2 lbs halibut aboard the Big Easy with Captain Max Shifler and is now the current derby leader.  A big thank you to George and Ayjan from Buttwhackers who helped offload the fish and get it to the Derby office. Most importantly thank you to Inlet Charters Across Alaska Adventures for booking my boat and making the trip possible.
